14.08.15: I Finally Made it to Tier 8

My Forza Rewards Points TallyMy Forza Rewards points page on the 14th August - Whew!

On the 15th June Turn 10's Brian Ekberg announced the Forza Loyalty Rewards program benefits to be awarded to FM6 players when they begin playing in September. With a bit of a grin on their faces I'd be willing to bet, T10 promised the usual collection of cars for player loyalty achievements such as Tier level, prior playing experience and prior VIP membership. But they also announced a massive five million in game credits for each of five previous Forza titles with 300 or more cars in their garage. If you happened to own all five prior editions then you could expect a massive 25 million credits waiting for you when FM6 went live in September. Not surprisingly Forza players around the world went into a spin and began to make up their garage count so that they could qualify for this unprecedented loyalty bonus offering.

In my own case I took this info in slowly, thinking it over for several days before I decided to do anything about it. I knew I didn't have enough cars to make up the 25 million, so at first I thought I would make do with the five or six million I could get for the cars I had. But then I thought no, I can do this. So I set about the task of purchasing several hundred cars in the four games I had less than 300 cars in. I didn't have enough in game credits to buy fancy cars so I bought a lot of VW Rabbits and Suzuki Lianas. Fortunately, buying several hundred duplicates wasn't going to be a problem.

What did emerge as a problem, however, was the Forza Rewards point scoring server which failed to update car counts for many players, myself included. This news thread on the Forza forums is littered with reports of server failure and complaints from countless dissatisfied players. With the clock counting down to the launch of FM6 and the last opportunity to qualify for these rewards quickly vanishing it was doubtful whether some of us would be given them.

I was one of the lucky ones whose garage counts were eventually updated, and so I could turn my attention to the other pressing issue at this time namely achieving Tier 8 and the promise of an Audi e-tron quattro loyalty car.

On the 17th July I had 853 Forza points to go before I achieved Tier 8 and about two months to do it in, so I really had to get cracking if I was serious about getting the Tier 8 loyalty car. I had a notebook which listed my current situation from which I could estimate where I could most easily make up the required points. Early each day I visited the Rewards web page and wrote out a table which contained the remaining numbers I could go for. It took me four weeks of furiously driving and tabulating which I will never forget because of the passion I felt working towards my goal.

I finally made it to Tier 8, of course, and I really enjoyed my experience. If any T10 staff happen to visit here then let me just thank you for a really fun and motivating loyalty program.

07.08.15: Calculate Cylinder Displacement

Close up of a bike engine

Here's a bit of Javascript I was mucking around with. The math is rudimentary, of course, but this nevertheless remains a handy bit of code I use to calculate the exact displacement of a cylinder engine on the basis of bore and stroke specifications.

Here are the Bore and Stroke specs for a couple of vehicles I own (in millimeters):

2002 VY V8 Commodore: 99 x 92
2010 V Twin XL883C Harley: 76.2 x 96.8
